“You don‘t have to be the loser or the victim.“
Words spoken by a strong, female voice. The only visual on screen: her mouth.
About the artist and her exhibition
South African Berlin-based photography and video artist Candice Breitz deals with violence towards sex workers, being one of the leading voices fighting to break the stigma against sex work. Her same-named exhibition Sex Work contains different videos, which have been shot right before the #MeToo movement in 2017, and are currently on view at the Frieder Burda Collection in Berlin.
Sex Workers Community in Cape Town, South Africa
Candice Breitz involves the community of sex workers of Cape Town in her videos, which fuels her work with honesty and authenticity. As visitors, we're allowed to enter a world of discrimination, where South-African sex workers speak about their experience and demand justice. By dealing with the synergies of gender and power, her work is significant for enhancing the discussion about women rights in our society.
